Google not indexing your pages (including "Crawled - not indexed")
the silent exclusion that no error message explains
Read the states precisely
Search Console > Pages reports several exclusions and they mean different things:
“Discovered - currently not indexed”: Google knows the URL exists (sitemap, links) but has not bothered to crawl it. A crawl-budget and priority verdict.
“Crawled - currently not indexed”: Google came, read the page, and declined to index it. This one stings because no error is listed: it is a quality judgment, not a technical fault.
“Not found (404)” / “Redirect error” etc: technical faults with technical fixes.
The first two are the chronic ones, and they are decisions, not bugs.
What actually earns indexing
Perceived value. Thin or templated pages (the same paragraph with a city swapped) get crawled and shelved. Pages that answer something specific, with substance a searcher would thank you for, get indexed and stay indexed.
Internal links from indexed pages. A page linked from your homepage via two clicks is a priority; a page linked from nowhere is a rumour. New pages need real links from real pages, in navigation or in body copy.
Sitemaps help discovery, not worthiness. Submitting a sitemap of 8,000 weak URLs does not force 8,000 indexings; it just makes the decline more measurable.
Crawl demand. Sites that update with substance get revisited more; dead sites get deprioritised across the board.
The fix order
Pick ten excluded pages that genuinely matter. Ask: does each answer a query better than what ranks now? Would a searcher bookmark it? Fix thinness with real content (not rewording), link each from two relevant strong pages, and request indexing in Search Console for those ten. Judge over weeks, not hours.
When to bring us in
Site-wide indexing failure (hundreds of pages excluded) usually traces to quality structure, duplicate clusters or crawl traps: our SEO audits name the pattern and the fix list in plain language, then we build or repair what the audit proves.
