Why most GA4 setups are useless
Pasting the GA4 tag into a website measures pageviews, and pageviews answer almost no business question. A useful setup measures the four or five actions that actually pay: enquiries, form starts vs completions, calls, WhatsApp clicks, and purchases. This page is the setup this desk ships with every build, written so an owner can audit their own installation.
The events that matter on a business site
- form_submit: the primary conversion. Fires only on successful submission, not on button click.
- form_start: the first field interaction. The gap between form_start and form_submit is your abandonment number.
- click_wa: every WhatsApp button tap, with the page it happened on.
- click_call: phone link taps on mobile.
- calculator_done: if you run a cost calculator, completion is your highest-intent signal, see this site's calculator for the pattern.
- scroll_depth (90%): a rough content-engagement signal on long pages.
Mark conversions properly
Each of those becomes a GA4 key event, and form_submit, click_wa and click_call get flagged as conversions. Without this step you have data soup: hundreds of metrics, zero decisions.
The four reports owners actually need
- Trajectory: users and conversions by week, trend, not vanity totals.
- Source of conversions: which channels produce enquiries, not just visits. This reallocates budgets.
- Page performance: top landing pages ranked by conversion rate, not traffic.
- Form funnel: starts vs completions by page. The biggest cheap win in most businesses hides here.
The common mistakes that poison data
- Double-firing: the tag fires plus a plugin fires plus a GTM container fires. Three rows per action makes every number wrong.
- Tracking button clicks instead of successful submissions: your conversion rate is fiction.
- No internal-traffic filter: your own team is your most loyal visitor.
- Consent-mode misconfiguration for India's DPDP context: collect what your privacy policy states, no more.
Setup and verification
Install via the native tag or Google Tag Manager, define the events, mark key events, add the internal filter, then test every event by hand and confirm each arrives in DebugView. Expect a senior setup in the ₹15,000–₹60,000 band depending on site complexity, and an hour of your time to define what "a lead" means for your business. Then the monthly report answers real questions: see the content guide for how this data should drive what gets written next.
