What "full-stack" honestly means
Full-stack does not mean expert-at-everything. It means competent across the stack with depth in one or two layers. The hiring error is expecting senior depth in frontend, backend, DevOps, design and SEO from one person at a generalist rate. The realistic expectation: a developer who can ship a complete product end to end, with senior-level skill in their strong layer and working proficiency elsewhere. See also the full-stack engagement page.
What full-stack work costs in India
₹1,700 to ₹2,900/hour freelance senior; ₹80,000 to ₹3,00,000/month dedicated; project builds per the web app bands. Rates at the bottom of the band should show exactly which layer is the "full" one and which is the "stack" one.
The breadth-vs-depth test
- Ask them to draw the last system they shipped: every layer, and where they personally wrote code. Real full-stack developers draw all of it and are precise about their layers.
- Ask what they deliberately do NOT do. Honest answers exist: heavy data engineering, native mobile, complex design systems. Vendors who do everything are quoting a team.
- Give a tiny cross-layer task: a form that saves to a database and displays the result. Watch for API design, error states, and validation on both ends.
When you need two specialists instead
- Pixel-critical frontend plus complex backend logic: two seniors beat one stretched generalist.
- Security-sensitive systems: a backend specialist owns auth and data; frontend stays frontend.
- Design-led brands: a dedicated designer plus developers, not a developer with opinions about typography.
The engagement that works
Start with a scoped project, see fixed-price or freelance models, then convert to dedicated or retainer once the working relationship proves itself. This desk's full-stack service runs exactly that sequence.
