The guarantee that should end the sales call
"Guaranteed first page on Google in 90 days." When a vendor says this, the call is over, not because the vendor is certainly lying, but because the guarantee is certainly not theirs to make. Rankings are Google's algorithm, your competitors' actions, and your market's behavior. Nobody, not the best agency, not the search engine's own engineers, can guarantee an outcome they do not control. Selling one is either fraud or a contract with an exemption list longer than the promise. This practice sells neither, and here is what it signs instead.
What IS guaranteed, in writing
- Scope and deliverables: the pages, features and integrations listed in the statement of work, delivered working
- Process commitments: weekly demos, staging access, response times, the working method as a contractual artifact, not a vibe
- Timeline honesty: a date is quoted, slipped dates are flagged the day the slip is visible, and the escalation path exists if that is not enough
- Quality gates: the QA checklist passed before launch, fixes for anything missed included
- Ownership and handover: everything in your name, the handover pack complete, no hostage assets
What is never guaranteed, and why that protects you
Rankings, traffic volumes, conversion rates, revenue. Not because effort is missing, because these are co-produced by your market, your product, your pricing and your competition. A vendor who guarantees them is either planning todefine the guarantee into meaninglessness, or plans to vanish before the measurement. The honest promise instead: the factors you can control get built to professional standard, measured properly (the measurement setup), and improved on evidence, which is how results actually happen, slowly and then suddenly. The rates page and the contract guide show what gets signed, line by line.
