Problem × Shopify
Shopify domain not connecting
pending verification, forever
Why it happens
DNS records point wrong. Shopify needs the apex domain pointed at its IPs (A record) and www as a CNAME to shops.myshopify.com. Registries auto-fill parking records (parked.godaddy, domain-for-sale pages) that must be removed first; leftover records make Shopify wait forever.
“This domain is already used in another store”. The domain is attached to an old Shopify account (the trial from years ago). Only that store can release it.
Propagation patience. DNS changes take minutes to 48 hours depending on TTLs; Shopify rechecks periodically. A “pending” status one hour after editing records is usually just waiting.
HTTPS still provisioning. DNS resolves, certificate still issuing: the domain loads for some people and errors for others. It settles on its own within hours.
Triage
Shopify Admin > Settings > Domains shows the exact status per domain. Verify the records at the DNS host with a lookup tool (not your browser): apex A records to Shopify’s listed IPs, www CNAME to shops.myshopify.com, no leftovers. Correct records + still pending after 24h: force a recheck. “Already used elsewhere”: recover the old store login and remove the domain there.
When to bring us in
Domain plumbing blocks launch day and email at the same time: we handle domain connections, subdomain structures (shop.site.com), email deliverability alongside, and the full DNS audit as routine Shopify work. If your domain is stuck in someone else’s old store, we scope the recovery path too.
