Problem × Shopify

Shopify duplicate products: find, merge and prevent them

the same product, five times, split reviews

Why they happen

Imports on top of imports. Re-running a CSV import without matching handles: Shopify appends new products instead of updating existing ones. A catalogue re-imported three times is three catalogues.

Channel sync apps. A marketplace connector or POD app pushing the same catalogue under slightly different titles/SKUs on each pass.

Copy-as-shortcut. Staff duplicating products to save typing, then editing the copy only halfway.

Why duplicates cost more than clutter

They split reviews across five listings, confuse inventory (stock spread across copies → phantom out-of-stocks), pollute analytics, and compete with each other in Google (four near-identical URLs splitting the ranking signals of one product).

Triage and cleanup

Export the catalogue as CSV and sort by SKU (or normalised title): duplicates fall out in rows. Decide the survivor per cluster: the one with the sales history, reviews and the clean URL. Check which channels/apps reference the doomed copies before deleting, some apps re-create what you delete until the mapping is updated. Redirect the dead URLs to the survivor: 301s preserve whatever search equity the duplicates accumulated.

When to bring us in

Bulk deduplication on a large store is data surgery with SEO consequences: we do the merge with redirects mapped, review equity consolidated, channel mappings corrected, and a prevent-the-recurrence fix at the import/sync source. Tell us the catalogue size and we scope it in writing.
