Problem × Shopify
Shopify inventory not syncing
stock numbers nobody can trust
Why it happens
Multi-location logic. Shopify tracks stock per location; the storefront sells from the location Fulfillment priority picks. An app or a staff member editing “the wrong” location changes numbers the channel you watch never sees. Available = sum across locations MINUS committed/reserved; watching one number while another moves is the classic confusion.
Two sync apps fighting. An inventory-management app and a marketplace connector both writing the same SKUs on their own schedules: updates overwrite each other in both directions, ending in phantom stock or zeroed-out items.
Import quirks. CSV inventory updates must match the exact handle/SKU and location; a silent partial-import looks like “not syncing” when it is “partly imported”.
API throttling. High-SKU stores hitting API rate limits get queued, delayed writes: syncs that arrive hours late during busy periods.
Triage
Pick ONE failing SKU. Check inventory at every location in Admin, and the item’s history (Inventory > history shows every change with its source: app name, staff, import). The source column names the writer that is lying. Two apps writing? Pick one system of record. Import failing? The CSV log names the rejected rows.
When to bring us in
Inventory truth is money: oversells cost refunds and reviews, zeroed-out items cost sales. We untangle multi-app write conflicts, rebuild the sync pipeline with one system of record, and add monitoring that alerts before the numbers drift. Scope it with us - fixed price, written.
