AI built your website. Now what?

AI website builders ship a site in a day. Then launch happens. The honest guide to what an AI-built website needs every month after, and who can actually maintain it.

The pitch was the website. The product is the years after.

AI builders made the build nearly free: describe the site, get a website. v0, Lovable, Bolt, Framer AI, Wix ADI, 10Web, Durable, or a developer with an AI editor shipping in a weekend. This page is not against any of it, this desk uses AI daily and documents exactly how. This page is about the part every builder tool skips: the site exists now, and it needs a person.

What an AI-built website needs in its first month

  • Real hosting and a real domain. Most AI builders host preview environments, not production. Production means your domain, managed hosting, SSL, and email routing that works.
  • Forms that actually deliver. The AI generates a form. Nothing guarantees the enquiries reach an inbox. Silent form failure is the most common AI-site defect, see the email deliverability guide.
  • Analytics with real conversions. Pageviews are default; enquiries, form starts, WhatsApp clicks and call taps are configuration. See the GA4 setup guide.
  • Security and updates. Generated code has dependencies. Dependencies get vulnerabilities. Someone must watch them monthly.
  • Backups with a tested restore. Not a button. A restore, rehearsed.
  • SEO plumbing. Titles, meta, schema, sitemap, Search Console. AI output includes some of it, rarely all of it correctly.
  • Legal pages and compliance. Privacy, terms, consent handling. Generated pages often omit or fabricate these.

Who can maintain an AI-built site?

The uncomfortable answer: often not the business owner, and sometimes not the AI. Three cases:

  • Builder-hosted sites (Wix ADI, Durable, 10Web): maintenance is subscription-bound to the vendor. You can maintain content, not code. Escape costs are real.
  • AI-generated codebases (v0, Lovable, Bolt, Cursor builds): real code, real dependencies, usually nobody who understands it. These need a developer for any structural change, and a process for dependency and security updates.
  • AI-assisted professional builds: built by a developer using AI inside a proper process. The developer maintains it. This is the case where AI genuinely saves money without transferring risk to you.

The monthly reality, honestly itemized

  • Updates and vulnerability watch: a few hours, needs judgment.
  • Backups and restore checks: mechanical, but must actually happen.
  • Uptime and error monitoring: alerts a human reads.
  • Small edits: banners, content, a new page for the campaign next week.
  • Analytics sanity: is the site still measuring enquiries?
  • Periodic review: performance drift, new SEO realities, legal changes.

That is a care plan, and this desk prices one at the AMC bands and runs it per the maintenance page. For AI-built sites specifically, the first month is usually a stabilization sprint: fix the silent failures (forms, analytics, SEO plumbing), then hand over to steady care.

The decision, compressed

AI made building cheap. It did not make operating free. If you have an AI-built site and no developer: run the lost-leads audit this week, then compare care plans. If you are about to commission one: commission it from someone who will still answer in month fourteen.
