Backlinks without the snake oil: what actually
Links still matter - but one real mention beats a thousand bought ones. What earns links honestly, and what to never buy.
Backlinks - other sites linking to yours - remain one of Google’s strongest signals. They are also the most snake-oil-infested corner of SEO. Here is the honest map: what links actually do, what earns them, and what to never touch.
What a link really is
A link is a recommendation with a vote attached. A hundred weak votes from spam farms weigh less than one genuine mention from a news site, a college, a government directory or an industry association. Google’s systems are built - explicitly - to devalue manufactured links and to penalise the sites that buy them. The entire “10,000 backlinks for ₹4,999” industry is either worthless or a slow-motion penalty.
The links that actually happen (and help)
Local and industry directories - real ones: chamber of commerce, tourism boards, industry associations, curated local listings. News and press - a business story, an event, a project in the local paper or portal. Partners and suppliers - the manufacturers you stock, the clients you serve, the vendors you hire; most will link if asked. Colleges and institutions - guest sessions, sponsorships, alumni pages. Genuinely useful content - the quiet compounding one: a guide so useful that local bloggers, teachers and forum answerers cite it naturally. This very site earns links from developers and business writers citing our cost pages - never asked for, always honest.
The ask that works
Most real links start as a polite email or WhatsApp: “we did X, we think your readers/visitors would find it useful, here is the link.” Three asks, one link, all genuine. A small business doing two asks a month builds a link profile that beats any bought package within a year.
Never touch
Bought link packages, link exchanges by email, comment-section link drops, private blog networks offered by strangers. The cheap ones do nothing; the effective ones get you penalised - and a penalty costs more to remove than a decade of honest linking ever cost to build.
The sanity check
Would you be comfortable if a Google engineer read every link you ever built? If yes, continue. If no, stop.
Link earning ships inside our SEO engagements - the honest way, the compounding way. Or audit your current link situation with the site teardown.
