How to rank your restaurant on Google
A practical guide for restaurant and cafe owners: the profile, the photos, the reviews and the pages that turn searches into table
Someone searches “dinner near me” or “best thali in Shillong”. Google shows a map pack of three restaurants and a handful of website results. If you are not in those results, the customer never knows you exist - no matter how good the kitchen is.
Fix the profile first
Your Google Business Profile is your restaurant’s second front door. Complete every field: primary and secondary categories, hours including holidays, menu link, reservations link, attributes (outdoor seating, home delivery, Jain food). Upload real photos of food, interior and exterior monthly - profiles with fresh photos get measurably more calls and direction requests.
Reviews decide the map pack
Ask every happy table for a review while the meal is still the highlight of their evening - a small table card with a QR code to your review link works wonders. Respond to every review, including the harsh ones; a calm, professional reply to a bad review convinces future readers more than the complaint itself.
Your website: five pages that do the work
- Homepage - what you serve, where you are, one-tap directions, one-tap call, table booking.
- Menu page - real prices, real photos, updated seasonally. A menu as a PDF image is the most common, most costly mistake in restaurant SEO.
- About - the story of the kitchen; this is what turns first-time visitors into regulars.
- Location and hours - embedded map, parking info, landmarks people actually use.
- Events or specials - the page that gives Google fresh content and gives customers a reason to return.
Local signals that move the needle
Mention your locality and landmarks naturally in page copy (“five minutes from Police Bazar”). Get listed on the local food directories and the city’s popular food Instagram pages - those mentions convert and they signal relevance. Keep your name, address and phone identical everywhere.
Load speed decides whether mobile diners ever see the menu. Compress photos, keep the site lean, and test it on a mid-range phone over mobile data - not your Wi-Fi.
Do this consistently and the map pack follows within a few months in most city markets. If you would rather cook than do SEO, our restaurant website service includes the local search work - or start with the calculator to see what a proper build costs.
