Competitor analysis for SEO: legally stealing

How to study the competitors beating you - their pages, keywords, gaps - and build something better, ethically.

Somewhere on page one, competitors are taking enquiries that should be yours. Good news: everything they did is visible, studyable and beatable. Competitor analysis is not copying - it is understanding why Google prefers them, then building something better. Here is the method.

Identify the real competitors

Not the business rivals you know personally - the SITES ranking for your money searches. Search your five most valuable terms and note who appears repeatedly. That list - often a mix of direct rivals, directories and content sites - is your actual competitive set. Sometimes the incumbent is a Quora answer; those are the easiest wins in SEO.

Study their pages like an engineer

For each ranking competitor, ask: What pages do they rank with? Count their service pages, location pages, guides. What do those pages answer? Read the top three properly - what questions do they answer, what do they show (prices? photos? reviews?), how long are they really? What is their structure? Hubs, internal links, CTAs - or a mess that ranks on age alone? What do they NOT answer? Every question they skip - cost, timelines, comparisons, objections - is a door you walk through with a better page.

The gap list is your roadmap

Write down: pages they have that you lack. Questions they answer that you do not. Proof they show that you hide. And - most valuable - everything they ALL miss. In most regional markets we analyse, virtually nobody answers the price question honestly, nobody maintains a profile properly, and nobody has built comparison pages. The gaps are rarely secrets; they are chores nobody did.

Build better, not identical

Ten percent better content, faster site, honest pricing where they hide it, reviews where they have none, and the technical floor they neglect. Then be consistent while they coast - incumbency fades fast when nobody maintains it.

The quarterly habit

Repeat the sweep every quarter: new competitors appear, old ones fade, and the gaps move. One hour a quarter keeps the roadmap current.

We do this analysis as step one of every SEO engagement - and this very site was built by running it on our own market. See what it finds for you: site teardown.
