Google Search Console: the free tool most
Verification, sitemaps, the pages report, the queries report - how to read Search Console like the business instrument it is.
If your website were a shop, Search Console would be the window facing the street’s foot traffic counter - and most businesses have never looked through it. It is free, it is Google’s own word on how your site performs, and reading it monthly turns mystery into roadmap. Here is the practical tour.
Verify and submit - day one
Verify your site (a few clicks if you have access to the domain). Then submit your sitemap - the file that lists every page for crawling. On our builds this ships generated and split automatically; on older sites it is the first thing to fix, because an unsubmitted sitemap means Google discovers your pages by accident or never.
The pages report: your site’s health chart
This shows every page and its indexing status. “Indexed” is good. The interesting ones: “Crawled - currently not indexed” (Google saw it and shrugged - usually thin or duplicate content; improve the page), “Discovered - currently not indexed” (Google knows it exists but deprioritised it - often a crawl-budget or quality signal), “Soft 404” (page says not-found in disguise). Each status is a to-do with an address attached.
The queries report: your customers’ exact words
This lists every search that showed your site, your position, and your click-through. Three monthly habits: Position 5-15 queries - page-two terms one push away from page one; these are your quickest wins. Impressions with no clicks - you appear but lose the click; improve the title and description. Surprise queries - searches you never targeted that find you anyway; often new page ideas with proven demand.
The everything-else
Links report (who links to you), mobile usability, and - most urgent - manual actions and security issues. If Google has flagged your site, this is where the letter arrives; ignoring it is how sites quietly vanish from results.
The monthly fifteen minutes
Queries, pages report, fix or note the top three actions, done. Fifteen minutes a month of reading your own instrument beats a year of guessing.
We monitor this for every care plan and SEO engagement client - and act on it, which is the part that pays.
