Internal linking: the free ranking lever
How linking your own pages like a knowledgeable salesperson spreads authority, rescues orphans and lifts whole sections.
Every site has a hidden ranking lever that costs nothing and is entirely under your control: how its own pages link to each other. Most business sites ignore it - and leak most of their potential. Here is the lever, and how to pull it.
Why links between your own pages matter
Google reads links as recommendations. External links from other websites say “this page matters”; internal links say “here is where the related knowledge lives”. Pages with more relevant internal links from your own best pages get crawled more, understood better and ranked higher. Pages with none - orphans - are effectively invisible no matter how good they are. On a recent audit, a site had thirty pages zero other pages linked to. Thirty pages of investment, invisible.
The salesperson test
A good shop assistant does not wait to be asked; they walk you over. Your pages should do the same: the page about wedding photography should point to its pricing page, its gallery, its FAQs. The page about “website not getting leads” should point to the fix. Read your page and ask: where would a knowledgeable salesperson naturally walk the buyer next? That is your internal link.
Three patterns that work
Hubs and spokes. One page per topic that links to every sub-page; every sub-page links back. Our services hub and city pages work exactly this way - and the sitemap-style sections mean Google can reach any page from any other.
The next step. Every page ends with the logical next action - not just “contact us”, but the page that answers the buyer’s next question. Contextual CTAs, not dead ends.
Rescue the orphans. Once a quarter, list pages no other page links to, and link them from their natural siblings. Thirty seconds per link, rankings rescued.
What not to do
Footer link-stuffs of a hundred keywords. Exact-match anchor text repeated robotically. Links nobody would click. Google reads unnatural patterns as exactly that - unnatural.
Internal linking ships as standard in our builds - hub pages, sibling strips, contextual next-steps. Want your existing site’s orphans found? That is part of the site teardown.
