Keyword research for beginners: finding what
A plain-language guide to keyword research - how to find the exact words buyers use, pick the ones you can win, and turn them into
Keyword research is eavesdropping on your market. Before someone becomes a customer they type their problem into Google - and the exact words they type are written down, free, for anyone who looks. Here is how to look, without tools you have to pay for or jargon you have to learn.
Start with the buying questions
Write down every question a customer asked you this month. “How much does a wedding photographer cost in Guwahati?” “Do you deliver mangoes to Kolkata?” “Homestay near Kaziranga with parking?” Each of these is a keyword with a buyer attached. Ten real questions beat ten thousand spreadsheet rows of vanity keywords.
Mine the free sources
Google’s own autocomplete: type your service and see what finishes the sentence. The “People also ask” boxes: gold-mines of real questions. Search Console (if you have a site): the exact queries that already bring impressions - pages ranking on page two are your quickest wins. Competitor sites: their service and FAQ pages show what they think buyers search - improve on it, do not copy it.
Pick battles you can win
A keyword has two numbers: how many search it, and how strong the pages currently ranking are. A small business wins where the current results are forums, directories and Facebook pages - because a proper page beats all three. “Wedding photographer India” is a war; “wedding photographer Shillong price” is a business. Local and specific beats big and generic, every time, in every market we have worked.
One keyword cluster, one page
Group questions that mean the same thing - “cost”, “price”, “how much” belong on one page. Then write the page that answers them completely and honestly: ranges, timelines, what changes the price. Pages that dodge the money question do not win the money searches.
Turn research into a roadmap
The output is not a spreadsheet - it is a publishing list. One page per cluster, prioritised by how close the buyer is to spending. Write two a month and in a year you own the questions in your market.
This is the exact process behind the pages we build - and the calculator shows what it costs to have it done for you.
