Mobile SEO: your real website is the one on the

Google ranks the mobile version of your site. Here is everything that means for a business buying or fixing a website.

Google ranks your website using its mobile version - full stop. If your site looks perfect on your laptop but pinches, scrolls sideways or hides content on a phone, that broken phone version is what Google sees, judges and ranks. Your real website is the one on the phone. Here is what that means in practice.

The mindset shift

Design for the smallest screen first, then let it grow to desktop - not the other way. Every decision starts with: does this work on a mid-range Android, one thumb, patchy network? Buyers in our markets are overwhelmingly mobile-first; a desktop-beautiful, mobile-broken site is optimised for the customers you do not have.

The mobile experience checklist

Text you can read without zooming - body text at 16px minimum, lines short enough to scan. Tap targets that do not require sniper accuracy - buttons and links with real spacing; the thumb is not a mouse. No horizontal scrolling, ever - sideways scroll is an instant bounce. The primary action visible without hunting - call, WhatsApp, directions, book: reachable within a thumb’s arc, not buried in a desktop menu crammed onto a small screen. Popups that do not hijack the screen - Google penalises interruptive interstitials; a full-screen newsletter popup on mobile is SEO self-harm. Speed on mobile data - the phone on Wi-Fi in your office lies to you; test on 4G in the field.

The technical floor

Responsive layout (one site, adapts to all screens - not a separate broken m-dot site), viewport meta present, images that scale rather than overflow, and no content hidden on mobile that exists on desktop - Google compares them, and hiding text on mobile reads as cloaking.

The proof this matters

Most local searches happen on mobile, most “near me” actions are calls or direction requests from a phone, and Google’s index is mobile-first across the board. A business whose mobile experience is excellent is playing the game everyone else is fumbling.

Every site we build is designed mobile-first and tested on mid-range Androids before launch - it is the first thing the site teardown checks on an existing site too.
